How To pt. 2: From Scratch

Hello curlies!

Hopefully by now you’ve discovered your hair type (mine is 3b). I’m going to go more in-depth with how to start from scratch for my hair type, but you curlies out there who don’t have thick spiral kinks, I will give advice I have gathered from over the years of meeting other ladies with curly hair. The beginning process is the same for every curly girl, the products afterwards can vary.

So let’s begin!

Shower Time

This time is crucial for curly hair. You will need a shampoo and conditioner that is meant for curly hair; shampoo that is strong enough to clean the hair but soft enough to be gentle of your sensitive curls. Your conditioner needs to be moisturizing and thick, unless you have thin type hair; you can skip on the thick part. But if your hair is coarse and thick like mine, you need a creamy conditioner. You will most likely use twice as much conditioner as you would shampoo. Curly hair has a tendency to be very dry, conditioner can help combat that. Shampoo can easily dry out your hair so you sparingly. I personally used a quarter size amount of shampoo and half a hand-full of conditioner. Yes, that seems like a lot but it works for me. That being said, the only true way to go about this process is trial and error and figuring out what works for you. I do suggest that you leave the conditioner in your hair for a but, just while you shave your legs and stuff, and rinse last. It does wonders!

Style

I STRONGLY recommend that you style as soon as you get out of the shower. Your curls perform better when wet and not frizzy. If your hair is fine (very thin) then you can probably wait until your hair dries, maybe 15 minutes, but if your hair is thick, straight out of the shower.

Now the discussion of mousse or gel. I use gel because my hair is thick. If your hair is thin or fine, I suggest mousse. I’ve used both and I just prefer mousse, so at the end of the day it’s all up to you. Like I said before, the only true way to go about this is trial and error. You WILL figure it out, you just have to venture out.

When you’re done putting product in your hair, walk away. I’m serious, walk away. The best thing for your hair is to let it air dry. I have a diffuser and use it, but when I want my curls to be bouncy and healthy looking I let the curls take their time and dry themselves.

This is a process, ladies! It will take time and a lot of patience to figure out what the heck you are doing, but I promise you, you will figure it out and you will be happy you did.

XOXO,

Curly Fri
